The Magic of Punta Arenas

Punta Arenas is often just a jumping-off point for brave souls heading further south into Antarctica or exploring Torres del Paine. But spend a few days in the city itself, and you'll uncover a rich, resilient town that blends rich maritime heritage with breathtaking natural drama. As you walk the streets, you'll feel the brisk Patagonian winds mixed with the scent of pine and ocean salt.

Braniff's History in Punta Arenas

To truly appreciate your arrival in Punta Arenas, you have to look back at the glory days of Braniff International Airways. Originating as a small regional operator in the United States, Braniff underwent massive expansion to become a multinational airline, eventually operating out of major hubs like Dallas/Fort Worth.

Braniff's expansion into Latin America began in the late 1940s. Following a major acquisition of Pan American-Grace Airways (Panagra) in 1967, Braniff became the undisputed powerhouse of US travel to South America. As the airline grew, they pushed the geographic envelope further than any other US carrier at the time. Their luxurious McDonnell Douglas DC-8-62 Intercontinental Jets crisscrossed the Andes and sailed down the Pacific coast to bring global travelers into the deep south of Chile.

Punta Arenas represented the absolute southern tip of this monumental route network. Flying into a city as rugged and remote as Punta Arenas required immense navigational skill and infrastructure. Braniff connected this remote Patagonian gateway to the rest of the world, making travel to the "end of the earth" a scheduled reality for explorers and business travelers alike.

Back on November 11, 1952, Braniff Airways employee Ms. Martha Burgoon, departed for Punta Arenas, Chile. Braniff's City Ticket Office

In the mid-20th century, walking into an airline's City Ticket Office was an experience in itself. Braniff was famously known for its "End of the Plain Plane" campaign—drenching its aircraft in bold, bright colors and outfitting its flight attendants in high-fashion uniforms by Emilio Pucci.

Braniff's City Ticket Office in Punta Arenas operated as a crucial logistical hub for travelers and locals. Given the geographical isolation of Punta Arenas, this office wasn't just a place to buy a ticket; it was a local lifeline. Here, travelers could book complex multi-leg journeys, arrange connecting flights back to Dallas or Miami, and finalize cargo shipping. It was a physical manifestation of Braniff's global reach, bringing modern international aviation services right to the door of the Strait of Magellan. The ticket office entrance sign was touted as the southernmost Braniff sign in the world!
