Cotopaxi National Park, Ecuador

The Quest to Find the Conical Giant: The Ultimate Guide to Cotopaxi National park

While many travelers mistakenly search for this volcanic wonder in Chile, Mount Cotopaxi is actually the crown jewel of the Ecuadorian Andes. Rising to a staggering 5,897 m, 19,347 feet, this active stratovolcano is one of the highest in the world and defines the skyline of the "Avenue of the Volcanoes". Whether you are a seasoned mountaineer or a nature lover seeking a glimpse of wild horses and paramo landscapes, Cotopaxi offers an otherworldly experience that feels like stepping onto a different planet.

Beyond the galleries, the Royal Palace of Madrid offers a glimpse into regal opulence as the largest royal residence in Western Europe, boasting over 3,000 rooms and stunning throne halls. Visitors shouldn't miss the changing of the guard, a stately tradition held every Wed and Sat. For a taste of historic Madrid, the Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol serve as the city's central pulse, where traditional architecture meets bustling street life. When you need a break from the urban pace, Retiro Park provides a vast green oasis featuring ornamental gardens, a picturesque rowing lake, and the ornate Crystal Palace.

  • Laguna Limpiopungo: A glacial lake at the foot of the volcano, perfect for birdwatching (look for Andean gulls and condors) and photography.

  • Pasochoa & Rumiñahui: Neighboring volcanoes that provide excellent acclimatization hikes with stunning views of Cotopaxi.

  • Wild Horses & Wildlife: Keep your eyes peeled for the park’s famous wild horses, llamas, and the elusive Andean condor.

The Legacy of the "Flying Colors" in Ecuador

Travel to this region is deeply intertwined with the history of Braniff International, which began serving Ecuador on Jun 04, 1948. The inaugural flight, a Douglas DC-6 commanded by Captain Ted Raines, departed Houston and arrived at Guayaquil's Simon Bolivar Airport on Jun 05, 1948. For decades, Braniff was the premier link between the U.S. and Ecuador, eventually introducing the first jet service to the country with the Boeing 707-227 El Dorado Super Jet in April 1960. The airline even commissioned unique "Flying Colors" art and posters from Modern Master Alexander Calder, and in the 1960s "World Globe" and Harvey Lloyd's folk art prints, to promote Ecuador's beauty to the world. Today, Braniff International continues to preserve this legacy, including plans for the restoration of a former Braniff hotel in Ecuador.
